Telecom Regulator TRAI may block stolen mobile phones soon

Stolen phones could soon be blocked making theft of phones unproductive.
The telecom regulator TRAI is expected to come out with recommendations on how this is to be done by December, said sources.

Currently, while the SIM card of the stolen mobile phone can be blocked, there is no mechanism to block the phone. These recommendations are expected to bring down the increasing incidence of mobile theft in the country.
These recommendations were expected to come this month, but Trai came across a new problem as some people can put duplicate International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI), which will make it difficult to track the phone.
IMEI is a unique 15-digit code that comes with every GSM mobile and helps to uniquely identify the handset. By using the global positioning system (GPS), a mobile operator can track the handset user. This can in turn help government agencies monitor the activities of anti-national elements. It even assists in murder investigations as was the case in the sensational murder of schoolgirl Aarushi Talwar in Noida, on the outskirts of New Delhi. Police was finally able to track the girl’s missing mobile phone through the IMEI number.
The telecom operators have suggested to Trai to create a central data base of IMEI numbers of stolen phones which could be shared by service providers. They have also proposed to bring a legislation to prevent cloning of IMEI numbers so that the stolen phones are not re-programmed with duplicate IMEI numbers of existing subscribers without their knowledge.
However, companies had asked Trai to make the blocking of the IMEI a chargeable service as there will be additional cost involved to upgrade the network to support the new requirement.
Earlier in 2004 Trai had issued a consultation paper in this regard. However, at that time, many service providers had no capability to track or block IMEI.
But the situation has changed as in 2008 the telecom department has asked telecos to disconnect mobile phones that do not have IMEI numbers as they could be misused by terrorists or criminals.
Thereafter telecom service providers put the Equipment Identity Regi-ster in their systems so that calls from mobile handsets without IMEI are rejected.

Ganesh laddu enters Guinness Record

A huge laddu of 5,570 kg prepared during recent Ganesh festival in the State on Friday entered the Guinness Book of World Records.
The laddu was prepared by Suvarnabhoomi Developers Pvt Limited in Tapeswaram, in the East Godavari district, which is well known for sweet Kaja. Expressing happiness, Satish Reddy of real estate firm showed the certificate received from Guinness Book of World records to media persons here in Visakhapatnam.
The laddu was prepared for the 117-feet tall idol of Ganesh installed at MVP colony in Visakhapatnam district last September and was used as prasadam for devotees during the 21-day long festival. It was the tallest idol installed in the state this year. As many as 50 workers laboured for a week to make the laddu and the ingredients included sugar, flour, moong dal and dry fruits.
The record of the largest laddu (551 kg) was earlier held by a Hindu temple in Britain. Interestingly, a sweet shop of Tapeswaram in East Godavari had prepared 450 kg laddu for a 55 ft tall idol at Khairatabad in Hyderabad.
Satish Reddy said that the laddu will be distributed to 25 lakh Ayyappa devotees in Rajahmundry, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam districts free of cost during Mandal deeksha.

India’s most famous heritage icon, the Taj Mahal, will turn Blue on the intervening night of November 13/14, to commemorate the World Diabetes Day on November 14.

A Blue Circle is the universal symbol of diabetes just as the looped red ribbon is symbolic of HIV.

The Union Health Ministry and anti-diabetes activists have obtained the permission of the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) to give permission to light up the Heritage Monuments to spread awareness against the disease of Diabetes that affects nearly 51,000,000 Indians.

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) is organizing the Diabetes Blue Fortnight programme starting from November 14, in association with World Health Organisation (WHO), National Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol Foundation (NDOC), Heal Foundation, Project Hope, and Fortis Hospitals.

Other Indian Heritage Monuments that will be lit up in Blue Circle include Old Fort, Red Fort, Qutub Minar and Humayun Tomb in Delhi; Imambada in Lucknow; Manek Chowk and City Palace Ground in Udaipur; Sidhivinayak Mandir and CST Station in Mumbai; Sahniwada Fort in Pune, 13 Gates of Ahmedabad; Konark Temple in Orissa and Victoria Memorial in Kolkata.

Globally, the iconic monuments that will be lit in blue include the Inverness Castle in the UK; Fountain Teatro Valli and Reggio Emilia in Italy; Bomb monument in Hiroshima; Union Square in San Francisco and CN Tower and Niagara Falls in Canada.
